A last-ditch attempt to preserve the decommissioned INS Viraat failed to make any headway Monday, with the Supreme Court dismissing a plea by a Thane-based group which wanted to buy the iconic aircraft carrier and convert it into a maritime museum.
A bench of Chief Justice of India S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian rejected the plea by M/s Envitech Marine Consultants Private Ltd, noting that the Defence Ministry had already refused the firm’s request and almost 40 per cent of the vessel had already been dismantled.
“You cannot do this. The (Bombay) High Court had allowed you to give representation to the government. You did it. The government dismissed it. You did not challenge it,” the bench said.
